The Function Of The Dogs Immune System

6 01 2009

Last report, I explained that the immune system is the body’s defense mechanism. When the defense mechanism is weakened, a disease or medical condition is the result. The hard part of understanding the function of this complex mechanism is trying to differentiate between the different components of the system. The components are white blood cells that are given different names for performing different functions. The following are examples of the different names and the functions they provide:

  • T lymphocytes- switches various aspects of the system on and off.
  • B cells- manufactures antibodies
  • Phagocytes- the scavengers
  • Macrophage cells- eats the debris in tissue and blood and alerts certain T cells to the presence of antigens.
  • Mast cells- release histamine in the bloodstream.
  • Killer and helper T cells- they zero in on cells infected by antigens.

The whole purpose of all these different defense components is to offer the body a defense mechanism. It is a very complex working mechanism that sometimes fails and the result is having these cells attack the body’s own tissues and cells instead of foreign cells. This is called an autoimmune response, or an autoimmune disease.

The animals body is under constant attack from pathogens or disease carrying parasites. The skin and coat offers the first level of protection by preventing the pathogens from entering the body. The secret to the immune system’s success is an elaborate and dynamic communication network and memory system. Millions of cells of different types pass information back and forth like a swarm of bees. Antibodies which are the bodies infection fighters, remember foreign invaders and can stop a repeat invasion. Once developed, an immunity can last for a lifetime.

The goal is for the balanced immune system to distinguish between friend and foe and only attack foreign invaders, avoiding the bodies own tissues. The intricacy of the immune system’s functioning are far beyond the scope of this blog. Suffice it to say that the immune system is designed to resist infection and functions to respond to pathogens.

That is the easiest explanation I can give for it’s function.

Secret To Dogs Health - Immune System

4 01 2009

This year we will be focusing on specific key topics that are crucial to understanding the philosophy of feeding a raw food diet. This month we are focusing on the immune system because the importance of the immune system is the most important topic that needs to be understood to understand why the raw diets work better than a heat processed food. Anything that we can do to improve the immune function will reduce the likelihood of future disease processes. The key to understanding the importance of improving the immune function is tied directly to the advantages of feeding a raw diet.

The advantages are the presence of living enzymes and phytonutrients in the natural raw diets. These elements in available in our formulas, and not able to be found in a kibble diet. They are the advantages that offer improved immune system function to improve the digestion, aid in the metabolic processes in the body and help to rebuild cellular mechanisms. The enzyme producing organs in the body can produce only a certain amount of live enzymes. The enzymes are the spark plugs that initiate the various bodily functions of which digestion has a big role. By supplementing the live enzymes and having them contained in the fresh raw food diets, we are extending the life of the enzyme producing organs and therefore extending life itself.

It is a known fact that the best healing comes from within the body. The healing is even better than what can be resolved with drugs. In order for the healing to be beneficial and or improved upon, the immune system needs to function properly. A depressed immune system is a ticket for health failure in some way or another. The immune system may not be directly responsible for a specific disease but you can be sure that most diseases are the result of this lack of protection.

Herein lies the basis for our whole philosophy. Heal from within by offering total protection from a strong defense mechanism. The body goes to work against all the factors that allows disease to happen. I have personally witnessed the results of the benefits derived from feeding this way for 32 years and I suggest that anyone that is having digestive, metabolic, allergic, and/or disease issues with their dog should give serious thought to converting to a raw meat diet formulation (the BARF DIET -a Biologically Appropriate Raw Food).

Try for yourself (your pet) and will be glad that did.

New Years Resolution For My Dogs

30 12 2008

Nearly everyone makes New Years resolutions and hopes for a better year to come. The key word here is hopes. For most people the reality of the new year is that it will unfold pretty much like last year. Same problems, same behaviors, same outcome. That is because little action is actually taken to achieve the goals we set for ourselves. So, we end up with the same results year in and year out.

The only real power we have in life is the power of choice. The choices we make are the pathways to change. It is important to seek out knowledge and eliminate mental handcuffs to make an informed decision.

This next year if you have decisions that need to be made regarding your own health issues or health issues for your dog- make a goal to make the right choices. Our company wants to make a difference in your pet’s health. We are committed to finding the way to convince all pet guardians to find a better nutrition choice for their animals. Become an informed guardian that seeks the knowledge and selects a new feeding program that improves the health of their pet.

We are convinced that converting a dog to a raw meat diet feeding program is the best possible solution. Feeding a dog a biologically appropriate raw meat (BARF) diet can make a significant difference in the health, attitude, and physical condition of your dog. Making the proper choice in this regard is of paramount importance. The caretakers that are having medical issues to deal with see the most improvement, but it is also wise to make a change to a more appropriate diet to offer a proactive approach to future health for your pet.

As we approach the new year, start to make decisions to make a change, you will be glad you did and so will your dog.

Happy New Year.

Vets Changing Attitude Towards Raw Pet Food

23 12 2008

For 32 years I have been advocating the merits of feeding a raw meat diet to our domestic pets. For 32 years I have received resistance to the philosophy from the veterinary community. They have received nutritional education from the dry food manufacturers and have received very little in nutritional education in school. Don’t misunderstand what I am saying—-I have a very high regard for the intelligence and abilities that all vets possess. They are very good at what they do and know. I actually have a higher regard for them than for the human doctors that I have been exposed to. They are not privy to hearing what the complaint really is. The dog or cat can’t tell them where it hurts. So, to be able to diagnose their condition or medical complaint is a gift unmatched by the human medical profession.

The veterinary goal is to safeguard the health and well being of the animals they treat. They have been coached to warn and caution their clients on the safety of feeding a raw food diet. The “possible” dangers that “potentially” might harm their clients are the reasons why they have not adopted the raw diet philosophy.

Well, I am happy to report that after 32 years of butting heads with the veterinarians and trying to advocate a philosophy against their cautions—-THE CLIMATE IS CHANGING!!!! After a recent veterinary conference in Reno and having been invited to speak at the Minnesota Vet school this week I can see that the veterinary community attitude is changing. They are now wanting to know more about the benefits of feeding a biologically appropriate food.

The recent Menu Food scare and melamine contamination that killed thousands of dogs and cats has opened the eyes of the veterinary community along with the shattering consumer confidence. The vets are realizing that to feed a more appropriate food just may have better long term benefits than feeding the “junk” that is harbored in processed food. We could all learn a lesson in making the proper choices for our our diets. But for the time being- let’s start with our companion pets and feed them the diet that Mother Nature intended.

Benefits of Raw Dog Feeding

19 12 2008

I reported last week that I was invited to present a program on raw feeding to the Minnesota college of veterinary medicine. On Tuesday I made the presentation to the 1st and 2nd year vet students. There were about 60 students in attendance. I was amazed at the interest generated from this group of students. They had interesting questions for me and were quite appreciative that the philosophy of raw feeding was presented to them. It offered them a choice from the conventional feeding programs offered by Hills and other dry food companies.

Some of the topics that I expected them to ask were never brought up such as the issues of bacteria and the cautions of using bones. Instead they asked really good questions regarding the ingredients and ingredient sources, and also the value of the live enzymes. I was able to give each of the students a copy of my book called “Living Enzymes”- the world’s best kept pet food secret. I think the attitude is changing regarding the value and acceptance of the raw diet philosophy. They were all interested in seeing the benefits that I summarized when switching to a raw meat diet. I pointed out the advantages of feeding a natural raw meat diet.

I think that once they weighed the comparisons between a heat processed diet and the raw diet it was obvious which one would offer the best advantage for the pet. I think they were given points that they had never heard before and as a result, the next time a dry product is suggested to them they will at least have an alternative choice that they can make in trying to find a suitable cure for the pet.

Dog’s Diet Blamed For Everything???

17 12 2008

This week has been unusual in that I have received more unusual questions regarding the use of the BARF DIET and the bizzare results that are blamed for the use of it. This week I was asked if the diet was responsible for the dogs feet being turned to the side. In 32 years I have never encountered this question and I thought I had heard them all but this was one of the most unusual questions that I have been asked. Earlier this week I was also asked interesting questions regarding the importance of iodine and manganese in the diet. And lastly a lady questioned me about the copper content and how the diet might affect her dog negatively. I’m always questioned about the calories in the diet because obviously a large portion of dogs in this country are considered obese. Consumers are looking for alternatives to the ingestion of high levels of soluble carbohydrates. It is obvious that more and more consumers are paying more attention to what they are feeding their dogs. The questions are coming as a result of the exposure of the dangers and hazards of feeding processed dry kibble diets.

The raw meat diets are not the only diets that are being questioned. In the news lately are several dry food recalls that are starting to scare the public and make them question the safety and confidence that they have had in feeding a dry heat processed dog food. The question I would like to propose is “why are the vet clinics bombarded with cases of skin and allergy problem dogs and cats?” This is one of the biggest complaints that our company receives every day. Why are the dogs suffering from heart problems, kidney disease, diabetes, digestive disorders, and many other chronic ailments? Are the diets they are consuming the cause?

One has to question the reasons because the long term affect of feeding food that contains harmful ingredients and detrimental additives will eventually take it’s toll on the body and it takes it’s toll in many different forms. What are the vaccines, antibiotics and steroids doing to the immune system? How long does it take to react to these foreign invaders?

My observation is that it takes between 5 to 6 years to bring about the disease or the condition. I see it every week from the calls I receive and it is amazing that the time frame is usually around the 5 or 6 year point. I guess it is no different from feeding a child incorrectly and watching the result happen in the same length of time. The body is very resilient however, there is a point when it says WHOA- ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Even though the dry diets may be responsible for the various medical conditions there is a way to reverse the trend. The mere switch to a raw meat diet (a BARF DIET) has been shown to reverse some really serious medical conditions. If you have a dog or cat that is suffering from a nutritionally deprived condition you can expect to get relief from the conversion to raw.

As guardian- the choice is yours.

Buying A Puppy, Beware Of Food You Feed

8 12 2008

You bought a new puppy and you are excited to raise this new little bundle of joy with the very best of care and the best food available. You have not paid too much attention to the bad press about the dry food recalls and the Menu Foods recall scare. You are a first time dog owner and you are relying on the TV advertisements about the gourmet dog foods available on the market. You rush out to the corner pet food store or to your vet to pick up whatever they have recommended for your dog. Maybe you are convinced that the vets prescription formula is the best choice available. You know it must be the right choice for your dog because the great advertisements have convinced you of that.

Many new puppy buyers are finding out that they have initiated an improper feeding program for their new pet. Unfortunately they won’t realize this for several years because it takes a while for the improper food to do it’s damage.

Wrong gas in the car = wrong result long term. After three decades of working with new customers and their new puppies- I have seen the dramatic results of improper feeding practices. The degenerative diseases that I deal with every day are indications of the results of feeding a diet that is not biologically suited for the species. It is no different that feeding your child high levels of soluble carbohydrates for several years and watching the result of doing that. The dry kibble diets are laden with high levels of soluble carbs that are causing several medical conditions. Other than obesity we see hundreds of cases of diabetes that was never witnessed 50 years ago. These are long term results that I am referring to- not short term. In the short term period you can raise a puppy on dry heat processed food and you may see a happy, thriving, growing puppy but many of the breeds we see today are having medical issues as a result of feeding this way.

When the statistic show that over 40% of this nation’s dog population is considered obese it is time to take a strong look at why and how to stop this trend. The same trend is happening with our children and it is equally alarming. The fast food craze is the same culprit as the heat processed kibble diets. They both are harmful precursors to future health conditions.

So what do I recommend as an alternate to this way of feeding? Simple solution!!!! Feed your puppy what he/she was designed to eat according to the laws of Mother Nature. Their physiology dictates what they should be fed. Canine teeth are for ripping and tearing flesh,( not eating grains). A shortened digestive track suggests feeding a raw meat diet. Stronger stomach acids help to accentuate digestion time and eliminate toxin development. All these physiological qualities in your puppy suggest that a proper diet is a raw meat diet that mimics the natural prey found in nature. The BARF DIET is designed as MOTHER NATURES food. Follow Mother Natures advice and you will have a lifetime of health benefits for your puppy.

Miracle Of Raw Meat Diets For Dogs

4 12 2008

COMMON MIRACLES OF RAW FEEDING. - CENSORED BY YOUR VET

Why do you suppose that the traditional veterinarian has a censored opinion about feeding a raw food diet? Is it because of the kibble manufacturing classes that were presented in vet school? Is it because of the propaganda that the dry manufacturers are supplying to the vets? Or is it because of printed publications offering scare tactics concerning the bacteria issues surrounding the feeding of a raw meat diet? We continually hear that the consumers vets are cautioning their clients about feeding a raw meat diet. They are mainly concerned about the POSSIBILITY of a bacterial infection or even the ability of the transmittal of the bacteria to the younger children or older adults. Notice I said possibility. They can’t be offering statistical information because it doesn’t exist. At least it doesn’t exist to the degree that they need to offer such concern about it.

We are suggesting that anyone deciding to switch from kibble to a raw meat diet maintain the same level of caution that they would have in preparing a raw chicken for their family. This includes proper washing of utensils and using bleach to wash down cutting surfaces. Washing hands is always recommended as well. Anyone following these precautions should have very little exposure to bacteria problems.

One doesn’t have to look very hard to see other possible bacteria sources. It could be an item found in the back yard that they dug up, it could be an old bone, it could be exposure to a bag of garbage, or even the back end of the neighbors dog. These are all potential sources of contamination that the dog routinely is exposed to every day. The secret to maintaining a healthy dog is to properly build up his/her immune system. The body’s internal protection mechanism is an amazing process that Mother Nature has built into every animal’s body. Disease and illness is caused when the immune system is depressed. One of the most common miracles we see with the inclusion of a raw meat diet is the positive improvement in the immune system.

WHAT CAUSES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM TO IMPROVE?

Two little known secrets are responsible for the strengthening of the immune system. Living enzymes and phytonutrients are the keys and reasons for the miracles. These two factors are WHY the raw diets work better than the kibble diets. A heat processed food will never be able to supply these two miracle generating secrets because they are destroyed with the application of heat.

Knowing this as fact, then why don’t more traditional vets discover this advantage. The mere recommendation of a raw meat diet could reverse many conditions that cannot be treated with conventional drugs and treatments. We have hundreds of testimonials from clients that have reversed stubborn skin and coat conditions, digestive disorders, cancers, diabetes, obesity and a multitude of other conditions. The difference is that we are not trying to treat the symptoms. We are after the cure. It is a more holistic approach to healing from within.

Some clients call it a miracle- others call it a simple conversion to a more appropriate diet. One that will promote healing from within the body itself. The mission our company is on is to provide the information, make the product available, and spread the word about the miracles attained from feeding a raw meat diet- THE BARF DIET!

Holiday Magic And Our Pets

26 11 2008

This is a special time of year when it pays to stop and think about family and friends and how important it is to have them part of our life. The same magic exists when we think about the joy and satisfaction that our pets provide for us. More so than ever before have the pets in our life become such an integral part of our life. For those that have never experienced this bonding with their pets it is a life changing experience. The Holiday’s seem to open the door for family bonding and for enjoying the people and pets around us.

This year, as we experience new challenges with our economy, and financial issues, we must surround ourselves with our family, friends and our pets. Our pets provide us with un-compromised love and because of that they deserve our attention to providing them with proper care and proper choices for adequate nutrition. Why not utilize this holiday magic to make some changes in their life too. A change in their diet may make a world of difference to a dog that is having medical challenges. Every day we are being questioned about how our diet might make a difference to conditions that have been triggered by feeding improper diets. It is alarming to hear about all the problems that dogs are having as a result of ingesting heat processed food. It is so easy to make a switch to a more natural raw meat diet. We see the same things happening with human nutrition. The warnings are posted every day about the ingestion of soluble carbohydrates. The obvious observable difference is to observe the physical condition of the general public. We are a pathetic, over weight, out of shape, nation. Our pets have the same problem! When the statistics claim that over 40% of our nation’s dogs are obese, it is time to do a wake up call. I wouldn’t question the fact that our human population suffers from the same disease.

The Holidays are difficult times to start new nutrition programs. This is true for humans BUT it should not be a problem for our pets. They are dependent on us for their food and they eat what we present to them. We can make a change to their nutritional programs very easily. When we make the decision to develop our New Years resolutions - be sure to include your pets into this life changing event. They deserve it.

Enhancing The Immune System

25 11 2008

The immune system is a very complicated network of cells and organs that respond to defend the body against foreign invader attacks.

The cells are able to communicate with each other through proteins called cytokines to mount a defensive attack. The body is constantly being attacked by germs, (bacteria, yeast, protozoa, and viruses). The cytokines help to defend against these microbes.

The mammalian body produces an ideal environment (warmth and moisture) for may microbes. They tend to multiply easily and rapidly in the body if the immune system isn’t able to defend against them. Symptoms or illness results from the actions of the pathological organisms.

The role of the immune system then is to recognize the dozens of different enemies and then produce “killer” cells to wipe out each one of the invaders. It is complicated because the killer cells are only released when an invader is present otherwise the immune system would be draining energy and building up secretions continuously.

The internal mechanism needed to monitor these secretions are very complicated. Sometimes, because of the complexity, the immune system produces undesired results, such as allergies and autoimmune responses.

I totally believe that the ultimate goal of any nutrient based food is to provide the very best rejuvenation of cells and allow the living enzyme systems to do their work to regulate the various bodily functions. The raw meat diets have certainly proved to be beneficial in this regard and it becomes the very key to finding out why they work better than other commercially prepared dry food diets.
